We love The Honest Kitchen at our house. We used their complete options with the protein in them when we migrated Mason to human grade food. It makes life pretty easy when all you need to do is add water + any other whole food/supplement you want to give your dog.
I was just starting to learn the science behind correct ratios of bone, muscle meat, organs, etc when I was told about these products. Learning what to feed and how much is the correct amount is overwhelming in the beginning so I was stoked to learn about THK!
Raw Feeding on Facebook
I learned about The Honest Kitchen in a raw feeding group I joined on Facebook called the Raw Feeding Community. Which if you’ve heard of it, you know is far more than just a Facebook group. I kept seeing pictures of meals with awesome veggie mixes and the letters “THK” in the description. I asked a woman who also raises Labs and she schooled me on exactly what “THK” is and encouraged me to try it. Thank God for you, Hannah!
The Honest Kitchen Base Mixes
The base mix takes the guess-work out of figuring the proper ratios of each food group your dog needs to be fed complete + balanced meals. You use their guidance to decide how much protein you give with the mix and then you rehydrate the mix with warm water. You can add raw or cooked proteins to The Honest Kitchen base mixes.
Fresh oily fish is best to give your dog as a source of Omega. You can use a high-quality fish or salmon oil if you’re learning how to raw feed and you’re not sure about the fish just yet. I was fine with serving raw sardines and mackerel right up front but I had a great brand of salmon oil in a nearly new bottle I wanted to use so I rotated salmon oil with canned sardines mostly.
Coconut oil was another supplement I fed with one meal per day. I waited to introduce coconut milk for a few weeks because I wasn’t sure if it would upset Mason’s stomach with the new diet already being introduced. He loves coconut milk now! An egg a day is also a great little protein boost so you can’t go wrong with adding that in right from the start.
We started Mason on the Preference mix and then moved to Kindly. He loved eating THK!
We do keep a box in the house as a back up for emergencies or someone needs to come in and feed him and we need to keep it simple for them.
Feeder Incentive Programs
The company has two incentive programs they offer their customers. You can enroll at the store you buy your boxes at and you can also enroll online if you buy directly from their website. I take part in both. The points that we gain give us FREE products. I like to stack them up for a good while towards boxes. On occasion, I’ll cash out and get some free treats but I generally like to keep the points in the bank. Of course, as part of their incentive program, you can get your own referral link. This helps you earn discounts and/or points. I have a great promo link I give to people for 50% off and I get to earn cash for my referral. A winning situation for my friend getting the discounted product and for me the feeder sharing all the glory that is The Honest Kitchen!
