Our family practices a proactive and whole lifestyle approach to healthy living and so we raise and care for our Labs in the same way. Its not just about what you feed. It’s about everything that goes into the care and quality of life of your dog. Below are a few examples of the things we are particular about when it comes to holistic dog care.
We pay special attention to the types of toys our Labs play with, making sure the toys are made from superior materials that will not harm the jaw or injure teeth. We also like to make sure the toys are promotive of paw & eye coordination. It helps the pups with dexterity when they need to use their paws as tools. If you give a dog a toy that he has to figure out, it stimulates his brain just like with toddlers. We do give fuzzy and snuggly toys too but they don’t tend to las to too long and they definitely must be supervised! #lablovetoeatstuffing
Orthopedic Dog Cots & Beds
I don’t like to sleep on a hard floor because it makes my bones and joints stiff and achy. Sometimes sleeping on a cold hard floor can leave me with a chill in my bones too. With the information out there about Labs and hip problems and us being pretty conscious about holistic dog care, it seems best to get the dogs off the cold, hard floor and onto a bed that provides some comfort and support to their bodies. I mean, doesn’t everyone love a decent bed and a great night’s sleep?
We like The Original Elevated Pet Bed by Coolaroo for lounging around the house. This bed is pretty awesome because it gets the dogs off the floor and the elevated platform provides support for the Labs’ joints and bones. The bed is made of breathable and cleanable material + the material allows airflow around the body which helps keep a dog comfortable. Check their product reviews out online. *We get our Coolaroo beds from Amazon.
For puppy safety, we do crate at night. It’s in the puppy’s best interest to give them a safe place to sleep and feel comfortable. It also keeps our house in standing condition and our possessions in one piece!
Cushioned and foam orthopedic beds are what we like to use in the indoor crates. A cushioned bed inside a crate can make a dog more inclined to go in and hang out willingly. There’s not a specific brand we use or can recommend because honestly, soft beds don’t last too long with a Labrador!
Elk & Deer Antler
Our dogs do play and chew on Elk and Deer antler. Antler are great for teething and gets a pup engaged with antler right from the start. We are selective in the size and shape of the antler our pups play with. Dogs aren’t left unattended with any antler, as they can crack, splinter, or shatter, and a pup can choke or be cut internally by a bone shard.
