We take steps to make sure our Labs are healthy before breeding so we can ensure we produce quality, healthy puppies.
Turning Leaf Labs are tested by Paw Print Genetics on both of their genetic disorder panels. Our Labs are certified clear or non-affected by disorders that can affect the Labrador breed. Because of this, we offer a lifetime health guarantee against your puppy being affected by these disorders.
If we use a carrier of any genetic disorders, that carrier will always be bred to a clear and the litter tested and marked for clears and carriers. Carriers will never be affected by any genetic disorders. It means they carry the gene and must always be bred to a dog who does not.
We breed for health and quality and we will always make sure steps are taken for the best outcome from dogs with high qualities.
We give a 24-month life-threatening disorder or defect assurance that pertains to genetic disorders and defects not named in our Health Guarantee. Our Health Guarantee includes copies of our dog’s genetic health documents.
Our dogs’ hips & elbows are x-rayed and submitted to OFA for preliminary certification (PRELIMS) consideration at one year old and for final certification at two years old. Please see our hip dysplasia guarantee below.
Additionally, our dogs’ eyes are checked by a board certified animal ophthalmologist each year for recertification with the OFA Eye Registry.
You can find our dogs’ OFA certifications online under each dog’s own tab on our menu.
Visit our Lifetime Breeder Support tab for details about our lifetime support.
Health Guarantee Requirements
It’s the buyer’s responsibility to get the puppy seen by a licensed veterinarian within 2 calendar days of receiving the puppy. Turning Leaf Labradors will not be responsible for Parvo, Distemper or Coronavirus after 24 hours of the pup leaving Turning Leaf. These are highly contagious diseases and they can be contracted immediately after leaving our facility. We guarantee your puppy’s feet only touch the ground at our disease-free home and facility and our veterinarian’s sterile exam room during health certification. Turning Leaf Labradors isn’t responsible for any illnesses diagnosed after the initial 48 hours, except where stated in this health guarantee.
If the puppy is found to have a life-shortening or life-threatening genetic defect at the initial exam, our health guarantee will offer a replacement puppy of equal value to be given if available. If there’s not a puppy available, 100% of the purchase price will be refunded, provided we are contacted within 24 hours of the exam. Additionally, the puppy must be promptly returned to Turning Leaf Labradors, at no cost to us. Puppy must be returned to Turning Leaf Labradors within 7 calendar days of approved return. We will refund the purchase price, pending verification of genetic defect by our veterinarian.
Also required are complete medical records and a signed document from your veterinarian stating the defect. All registration and puppy documents given at the time of purchase must be returned to us with the puppy.
Genetic Health Guarantee Claims *Valid for 24 months from date of birth of your puppy
The complete medical record, including proof of all on time vaccinations for your puppy, will be required from your Veterinarian. Documentation stating the puppy has been diagnosed with a life-shortening genetic defect must be provided within 24 hours of diagnosis. Complete vaccination records with the date stamp and vaccine administrator’s name must be provided from each visit, not a summary printout. Turning Leaf Labradors will not be responsible for any veterinary or medical bills.
We reserve the right to seek a second opinion with our own veterinarian. If verified that your puppy has a life-shortening/life-threatening genetic illness during the first 24 months of its life, we will remedy the situation with you. Options:
- You may keep your puppy and get a replacement puppy from a future litter. Must be the same breed and gender. This will happen after documented proof of spay/neuter for the first puppy has been provided.
- You may return your puppy and receive one replacement puppy from a future litter. Must be the same breed and gender.
We will not be responsible for the shipping cost for any of the above options
In the unlikely event of death in the first 24 months, due to genetic defect, confirmation & statement of cause from your Veterinarian is required. If the cause is unknown, a necropsy is required at puppy owner’s cost. Under no circumstances will Turning Leaf Labradors be responsible for veterinary or medical bills incurred.
Hip Dysplasia Guarantee
We provide a 12 month (from date of birth) Canine Hip Dysplasia (CHD) Guarantee. The Institute of Canine Biology says more knowledge has been gained through studies and testing of Labs through the years & findings show genetics are responsible for only a modest percent of dysplasia. We now know environmental factors play a bigger role in the development of hip & elbow dysplasia than genetics. This means lab owners must take steps to ensure their puppy develops strong joints.
Turning Leaf Labradors gives puppy buyers online access to the puppy’s Sire & Dam’s OFA- Normal Rating for their hip & elbow x-rays.
We make sure your puppy’s environment during the first 8 weeks of its life is promotive of good joint development. Accordingly, we limit running on slippery floors, using the stairs, and immoderate standing and jumping. Additionally, we don’t overfeed puppies. All things considered, overfeeding puppies can add weight stress to a puppy’s joints which can mean weakened joints.
If your puppy is affected by CHD during its first 12 months of life & it hasn’t been bred, we will offer you another puppy. Turning Leaf Labradors require verified x-rays of the findings (from Pennhips/OFA), and proof your puppy has been neutered/spayed. In conclusion of our review, you may choose a puppy of same gender and color from next available litter. You may keep your original puppy too.
